Create a better and healthier you! Create a better and healthier you! Create a better and healthier you!

In this first-person narrative, Jillian McDonald, a 4-H healthy living coordinator, shares how stress affects youth and why early mental health support is essential. The piece highlights age-appropriate 4-H programs that build emotional resilience through mindfulness, self-awareness and decision-making.

Jillian McDonald, 4-H Healthy Living Coordinator, leads healthy living education for Clark County youth through programs focused on mental health, emotional wellness, substance use prevention, physical activity and nutrition.

As a 4-H Healthy Living Coordinator, I work with youth across Clark County, and I can tell you this: stress is a big part of their lives. Between academics, social media, extracurriculars and the constant noise of world events, many young people feel overwhelmed, even if they do not always say it.

Managing one’s mental health is not about avoiding sadness or anxiety. It is about handling challenges in a positive way, staying connected to others and bouncing back after stress. Without healthy coping skills, stress can affect every part of a young person’s life, from sleep and school to friendships and overall well-being. That is why it is so important to build mental health skills early.

This is where 4-H makes a real impact.

As the nation’s largest youth development organization, 4-H not only helps youth grow academically and civically, but also emotionally. Through hands-on, research-based programs, we equip young people with tools to manage stress, build confidence and care for themselves and others.

According to a 2020 National 4-H Council survey, more than 80% of teens said that mental health issues were a significant issue for youth and called for America to talk more openly and honestly about mental health issues

That support is especially important during out-of-school time, when young people have more space to reflect and grow. Summer, in particular, offers an ideal chance to reset and establish healthy routines. That is why this season, the Nevada 4-H Youth Development Program is offering age-appropriate programs that promote mental wellness, from helping young kids name emotions to teaching teens mindfulness and goal setting. It is always inspiring to see young people realize they have control over their mental health. That is the power of 4-H – helping the next generation grow stronger.

Stress coping skills – the 4-H way!

Starting Young with Mindful Me (Ages 5–8)

At an early age, children begin forming their understanding of the world and themselves. Mindful Me introduces mindfulness through stories and hands-on activities focused on time and stress management, mindful eating and setting personal goals—all while fostering a healthy sense of self.

Your Feelings Matter (Ages 8-11)

As emotions grow more complex, Your Feelings Matter helps youth recognize, name and express them in healthy ways. Participants build emotional intelligence and learn to respond to others with empathy — skills that support strong relationships and lifelong well-being.

Health Rocks! (Ages 8–14)

Navigating peer pressure and risky behaviors is not easy. Health Rocks!R equips youth with decision-making skills and the confidence to say no to tobacco, alcohol, vaping and drugs. Interactive lessons promote choices that support long-term health and well-being. You can watch this testimonial to familiarize yourself with the program.

GEM: Get Experience in Mindfulness (Ages 10+)

Stress is part of life but learning how to manage it can make all the difference. GEM offers practical, engaging mindfulness activities that help youth slow down, reflect and build inner calm, especially valuable during the often-busy preteen and teen years.

Mindful Mechanics (Ages 13–18 & Adults)

Mindful Mechanics takes a deeper dive into mindfulness for teens and adult mentors, focusing on emotional regulation, goal-setting and healthy habits. The program helps participants build lasting skills that support physical, emotional and social well-being.

Join the Movement

Every young person deserves the tools and support to care for their mental health. These programs show that small steps, such as naming a feeling, practicing mindfulness or learning how to talk through a challenge with a safe and trusted adult, can lead to lasting, positive change. They also send a powerful message: You are not alone, and reaching out is a sign of strength.

Nevada 4-H is committed to helping youth grow into confident, capable individuals ready to face life’s challenges. Families can contact their local county Extension office to learn more or enroll in a program. Educators and community partners are also invited to connect and collaborate. Together, we can help Nevada’s youth thrive one mindful moment at a time.
