President Donald Trump has yet again launched a personal attack against a woman reporter who asked him a question he didn’t like. This time, Trump’s insults have been combined with gaslighting, as the president attempted to deny making a comment he made just days earlier.
Trump attacks Rachel Scott as ‘obnoxious’ and ‘a terrible reporter’
This latest tense and bizarre exchange happened between Trump and ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott, one of the most prominent Black women at the network. Scott asked Trump about his previous comment that he would support releasing the full video of a controversial second strike against an alleged drug-smuggling boat in September.
“Mr. President, you said you would have no problem with releasing the full video of that strike on September 2nd off the coast of Venezuela,” Scott reminded the president.
Before she could finish her question, Trump interrupted, denying he had said it.
“You said that, I didn’t say that. This is ABC fake news,” Trump said, before deferring to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s opinion on releasing the full video. Trump then insulted Scott as she followed up on her question about releasing the video.
“You’re the most obnoxious reporter in the whole place. Let me just tell you: You are an obnoxious — a terrible, actually a terrible reporter, and it’s always the same thing with you.”
A growing list of Trump attacks against women in journalism
Trump’s attack against Scott is the latest of several instances in recent weeks in which he has personally attacked a female reporter. As Blavity previously reported, Trump snapped at a Bloomberg reporter who asked him about possibly being implicated in files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with the president remarking, “quiet, quiet piggy” at the journalist. In another incident, Trump repeatedly referred to a woman journalist as “stupid” for asking him about his administration’s vetting of the man alleged to have shot two National Guard members in an attack in Washington, D.C. Trump also attacked The New York Times reporter Katie Rogers over an unflattering article she co-wrote about Trump’s health and mental fitness.
Under scrutiny, Trump falsely denies his words
In each instance, Trump’s lashing out has happened in response to a woman asking a question or bringing up a topic he didn’t like. It appears to be the case with the Scott exchange as well, coming amid accusations that the administration may have committed a war crime by conducting a second strike against the survivors of the initial bombing of an alleged drug boat. Despite Trump initially agreeing to release the video of this second strike, he appears to be backtracking, given Hegseth’s hesitancy. Nevertheless, Trump’s accusation that Scott peddled “fake news” has been debunked online by a video of Trump making the comment that Scott accurately quoted only five days earlier.
Instead of standing by his pledge for transparency in the controversial and possibly illegal boat strike, Trump now claims he never said it. As he continues to face widespread scrutiny over his military strikes and other issues, Trump’s anger continues to be aimed at women in journalism, with Scott being the latest target for the president’s insults.
