Ahead of the new year, President Donald Trump already has big plans regarding his mass deportation policy. Now, naturalized citizens have will be subjected to targeted attacks in order to meet a monthly quota, according to a new report. And it has the potential to change the way we interpret the U.S. Constitution.
The New York Times reported the Trump administration is ramping up efforts to take away citizenship for hundreds of naturalized immigrants each month. The report estimated 100 to 200 cases would be seen on a monthly basis in order to meet the Trump quota.
The news comes as the U.S. Supreme Court is set to decide on Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship. We previously told you one of the first things the president did after returning to office was to attack the Constitution — specifically the 14th Amendment guaranteeing citizenship to people born on U.S. soil. The matter is now before the high court. Still, that’s not stopping Trump from already acting out his wishes through policy.
There are two types of American citizens. The first falls under birthright citizenship protected by the 14th Amendment. The second is considered “naturalized,” meaning they applied for citizenship after living in the country for an extended amount of time. In order to be granted citizenship, an applicant can have no criminal record and must take a civic exam– among other requirements.
The Trump administration alleged severe fraud has allowed some “bad” folks to slip through the immigration system. “We will pursue denaturalization proceedings for those individuals lying or misrepresenting themselves during the naturalization process,” a spokesperson for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services told Reuters.
This marks a “massive escalation of denaturalization in the modern era,” the Times noted. Last year, the government reported 26 million naturalized citizens in the country. Without them, the American economy would surely take a hit. Practically every major industry would be negatively impacted as well.
Trump has also issued an international travel ban in addition to revoking Temporary Protected Status for several ethnic groups, according to reports.
