A fresh addition to the list of seminars offered at several American colleges that focus on hip-hop and hip-hop artists has been added. According to Philly’s WHYY, a course that aims to support the living, reputation, and social effect of Kendrick Lamar will be offered to students during the upcoming quarter at Temple University in Philadelphia.
The book is titled” Kendrick Lamar and the Morale of the M. A. Timothy Welbeck, an associate professor in the college’s Africology and African American Studies office, will teach the course,” A. D. City.” Welbeck, a lawyer whose scientific work intersects culture, laws, and culture, has taught other courses on hip-hop, including” Hip-Hop and Black Culture,” and” No City for Young Men: Hip-Hop and the Narrative of Marginalization,” which are also the titles of his forthcoming book that will examine “how hip-hop communicates the lived experience of persons who live in urban centers across the country, particularly Black men who live in big cities,” according to his college bio.
Students will examine Lamar’s work through an Afrocentric lens in Welbeck’s course on the artist and examine both the policies that affected his upbringing and Compton, California, as well as the environmental conditions that have affected his style and perspective. The course will also cover Lamar’s position in the West Coast canon and the musical background Lamar has inherited there.
The course at Temple University won’t be the first to explore the legacy left behind by Lamar. Georgia Regents University in Augusta, Georgia, offered a literary composition course titled” Good Kids, Mad Cities” that used Lamar’s debut album,” Good Kid, m. A. ” A. D. City” as a starting point. Lehigh University and Concordia University, among others, have also offered courses that focus on Lamar’s work.
Two well-known books have been written by hip-hop and music scholars about the cultural legacy and imprint of the Compton MC, who is currently on tour for his” Grand National Tour” with artist SZA, in addition to the academic courses that examine the influence of Lamar in a scholarly context.
