The following five partners in ProPublica’s Native Reporting Network will be selected according to a new call for proposals released on Wednesday. These newsrooms may be chosen as part of the organization’s “50 State Initiative,” which pledges to collaborate with one newspaper from each state by 2029. Programs close on July 21 at 5 p.m. Eastern. On October 1, 2025, the reporters chosen for the one-year system will start working.
Through this partnership, ProPublica will pay news organizations for the selected reporter’s salary (up to$ 75, 000 plus a benefits stipend ), allowing them to work full-time for a year on a critical journalism project of importance to their communities. Also, ProPublica offers editing assistance in addition to our expertise in audience, audience, and engagement.

ProPublica is now working with newspapers in the first 10 states to implement the 50 State Initiative; additional five newspapers will open in July. The 50 State Initiative, which includes a growing group of reporters reporting from local communities and pioneering collaborations with local media organizations through the LRN system, expands ProPublica’s work to both the local and regional levels.
The program expands our aid for local news, which today includes the LRN, as well as independent monitoring centers in the Midwest, South, Southwest, and Northwest, as well as an investigative system in Texas in partnership with The Texas Tribune. ProPublica has more than 25 employees writers and more than 20 monitoring partnerships nationwide, making it possible for individuals to profit from world-class news that may influence tangible change in their communities.
The LRN was set up in January 2018 to address the lack of investigative reporting at the local levels. Since then, it has resulted in alliances with some 80 news agencies across the nation.
